Public Transport

Rail Travel

Herefordshire has a mere four railway stations, the least number of any English County. However, they are served by reasonably frequent services. Operators are: Arriva Trains Wales: (Cardiff), Hereford, Leominster, (Crewe, Manchester) Central Trains: Hereford, Ledbury, Colwall, (Worcester, Birmingham, Nottingham) First Great Western: Hereford, Ledbury, Colwall, (Worcester, Oxford, London). For all timetable and fare enquiries go to the National Rail Website

Bus Travel

The county was involved with the original deregulation trials, and has a multiplicity of operators. Services range from hourly on the trunk routes to once every two weeks for some outlying villages, although major cuts in sevice occurred in September 2004. The timetables of all services are available on a single Herefordshire Council Website

Industry Associations

Society of Independent Brewers [SIBA]

Formed in 1980 to represent the interests of the emerging new wave of microbrewers, and originally named the Small Independent Brewers Association, it changed its name in 1995 to reflect the growth of many members' businesses. SIBA's objective is:- "To campaign on behalf of craft brewers to ensure that they have the best possible opportunity to bring their goods to the market." Website

Beer & Pub Association

The new name for the Brewers and Licensed Retailers Association. Website

Cask Marque

The decline of cask ale sales in the '90s has been attributed to poor quality and failure to attract new younger drinkers. The Cask Marque scheme aims to raise standards and achieve a consistent, cool pint every time. Initially Cask Marque proposed a temperature range that was thought by CAMRA members to be unacceptably low, but later a compromise was agreed. Take-up in Herefordshire was fairly slow, but now some 10 pubs are accredited. Website

Independent Family Brewers of Britain

Although decining in number, the Family Brewers produce about 50% of the UK's cask ale, but a mere 5% of beer in total. The association was formed in 1993 to promote cask ale and ensure fair representation on issues affecting members, including the problems associated with European duty differentials and continuation of the traditional tenancy system. Website

Portman Group

The Portman Group was set up in 1989 by the UK's leading drinks producers, which together supply the majority of the alcohol sold in the UK to promote sensible drinking without misusing alcohol. It encourages responsible marketing and attempts to foster a balanced understanding of alcohol-related issues. Website

British Institute of Inn Keeping

The British Institute of Innkeeping (BII) is the professional members' organisation for the licensed retail sector. They have about 15,000 members, who enjoy the status and benefits that membership offers. Website
